Hacksaw Ridge
Hacksaw Ridge 2016 USA Hacksaw Ridge is a true story of the war hero Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) and how he saved 75 men without touching a gun during the Battle of Okinawa in WWII. Okinawa is known as the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War. Doss joins the army because it's his American duty to serve but due to events in his past and his religious beliefs, he does not want to handle a gun and just concentrate on saving lives rather than taking them. This was two separate movies. The first half was slowly paced and took too long to set up the movie but once basic training came and it got better. THEN Doss ended up on the battlefield and it was amazing. The second half of this movie is one of the best war movies not named Saving Private Ryan (my personal favorite movie ever). The war scenes are bloody, brutal and realistic. There are 3 standout performances to mention. Mel Gibson who's nominated should definitely get major consideration for winning best director. Filming those scenes had to be very difficult. Surprisingly Vince Vaughn played a great drill Sargent. Finally, Andrew Garfield, especially in the scene where he prays to just keep rescuing one more soldier.
