Kumiko The Treasure Hunter 2014 English | Japanese Season 3 of Fargo the TV show is on tomorrow so I figured I'd do a review on the movie... Well sort of. Loner Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi, nominated for next supporting actress in Babel 2006) finds an old VHS copy of Fargo. Thinking it is a documentary thanks to the opening text reading "This is a true story. The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred." Kumiko heads to Fargo to find the money that Steve Buscemi's character buried in the snow. A language barrier and interesting town folk get in the way. This character based dark comedy/drama moves at a deliberate pace and features excellent cinematography. Rinko Kikuchi was great with not only dialogue but also facial expressions. Kumiko The Treasure Hunter is based on an urban legend where a Japanese woman (Takako Konishi) went missing in North Dakota where some media stories said she came from Tokyo to find the buried treasure. Rinko Kikuchi probably should have played Major in Ghost in the Shell
