Sugar
Sugar 2008 USA English/Spanish Here's a relatively unknown baseball movie that's more of an immigrant story, rather than what happens on the field. Following Miguel "Sugar" Santos (Algenis Perez Soto), a pitcher from the Dominican Republic as he tries to make it from his home town the the majors. Baseball is just the platform; the real story is when Sugar is sent to the minors. Struggling with american culture and a language barrier as he was only taught baseball relevant words. Ordering only French toast because it's the only food he knows how to say. He brings the off the field issues to the mound and he starts to struggle. Predictable at some points, but Sugar has good story and excellent cinematography. Both fans and non-fans will enjoy the movie. It's a different situation from the Dominican Republic but the stories of Cuban players defecting to come play ball in the states are amazing, Yasiel Puig's especially.
